Pressure culvert
Culvert, screen and outfall manual, (CIRIA C786) published by CIRIA in 2019, defines a culvert as: 'A covered channel or pipe which prevents the obstruction of a watercourse or drainage path by an artificial construction.'
It suggests that: ‘A short culvert can be designed, or may act as a pressurised culvert. In this situation, the barrel flows full and there is a ‘head’ of water acting throughout the culvert length (ie the water in the culvert is under more than atmospheric pressure).’
